Summer vacation

Ryan and I recently went to Cape Cod, Massachusetts to celebrate the end of his 2nd year of med school. He studied 6 weeks for the boards and finally took it in June, and we left the day after for a weekend in Cape Cod - his 4 whole free days before he started third year. It was beautiful and very interesting. We visited a few cities in Cape Cod before stopping in Plymouth to see all the Pilgrim sites and everything. One city in Cape Cod, Provincetown, although the actual first site of the Pilgrims landing, is now a gay community (quite a change from the religiously driven Pilgrims)! Needless to say, it was rather interesting and strange. But at least the beaches were nice! We also took our bikes and went on some beautiful trails. When we went to Plymouth we visited a plantation that is modled after the original Plymouth colony and was very interesting. All the people there are dressed exactly like the Pilgrims and speak in the old english language. They are all portraying specific people who came on the Mayflower and can tell you their whole life stories when you talk to them, what their life was like and everything. It was very interesting. They also had a re-creation of the Mayflower that they sailed in the 1960s to re-enact the Pilgrims journey. My mom told me of a few of our Hunsaker ancestors that were on the Mayflower, and it was neat to see all their names, and even many streets all throughout Massachusetts named after them. Speaking of streets named after ancestors, I also live right near a Wolf's lane that my mom says is named after our Wolf ancestors. In fact when she came to visit last year she was telling us about the Wolf ancestor who used to live here and said, "In fact, there was a street named after them - Wolf's lane." It wasn't even three minutes later that we passed the exit for Wolf's lane - that we had never seen before! And she says one of our ancestors also on the Young side (can't remember who) joined the church in Westchester county (where I live) in 1853 or something - so anyway, it's kind of nice to feel like I do have some roots in the Northeast. Because other than that - there's not too much I love about it! Just kidding, we like it here pretty well, but I've realized lately that this just isn't a place I'm going to leave and say "Oh, but I just LOVED the people." Nope, sorry, northeasterners aren't the type of people I'll miss at all! Anyway, we finally got back Ryan's board scores the other day and he did FABULOUS!!!!! He was so worried and studied SO hard because he wants to go into ophthalmology, which is very competitive, so now he's very relieved. He scored somewhere in the 90th percentile (or higher), which is just wonderful and I'm so proud! So now he's started his rotations in the hospital and is first doing an OB/Gyn rotation. He definitely knows he doesn't want to be an obstetrician! His spanish comes in really handy here and makes him popular with all the residents because he can translate. But in only his second week in the hospital, he had to be the translator to tell a woman she had only 6 weeks to live (she had ovarian cancer or something). So he's really getting thrown right into things. The hospital he's at is all high risk patients too, so it's not a really great thing that every birth he's dealt with is high risk! It makes him a little nervous to have kids now that he has only seen all the things that can go wrong! Anyway, other than that we're just really busy. For anyone who didn't know, I'm becoming a hairdresser in addition to my full-time job. It's sort of an apprenticeship program at a very upscale salon in Greenwich, Connecticut where women easily pay $300-$400 dollars to get their hair done there. Anyway, I'm loving it and am almost about halfway through getting all my hours in. I hope to be able to do it from home eventually when we have kids. Anyway, that's what's going on here. It's so fun to hear about all these babies and missionaries and weddings! Sad to be missing it all though!

Before Nate left on his mission we had one last family trip down to St. George. We enjoyed a wonderful stay at Yancey's. The Ures took us on a great hike in a shady canyon, part of which included trekking through water up to waist deep. It was beautiful! Bethany was blessed by her father on Sunday. We enjoyed our family associations the following weekend with the baby shower and all the missionary activity. We are so grateful for your love and support, and to be able to share joy and sorrow with all of you.

Welcome to baby Bethany, born to Angela and James at 9:17 a.m. on Monday, June 13th, weighing 9 lbs. 5 ozs, measuring just under 21 inches.

Announcing Nate Stott's mission call, received April 27th, 2005. Nate will be returning to Oregon, serving in the Oregon, Eugene mission. He enters the MTC on July 13th.
